Travel Update Wed, Jan 17, 2024

Last night it got down to 26 degrees F here in Northern Florida. For those of you shivering in the Northern states that sounds pretty warm, but for Florida it is cold.

A Park Ranger came and told us to turn off the outside water and have it dripping at the post.

I unhooked the hose and put the water filter in the hold because if it froze it would burst. The hose I emptied and left out because it would be fine and I've done that before. And I had a nice drip coming out of the water spigot.

Normally we heat with electric space heaters, but when it gets really cold we also use the propane heater on the Airstream because it forces some heat into the belly of the unit where the water tank and holding tanks are. So we did that last night.

At 11 PM I heard something outside. So I went out. There was a hold door open and I don't know if that had made a noise or not. While I was out I checked the spigot and it was already frozen and the drippint had stopped. There was a shut off at the gound so I tuned that offl.

This morning the plastic pipe was split from top to bottom and the metal spigot had popped off and was on the ground.

So that was repaired in the morning by park workers. They were one middle aged and two older men. They were having a good time. They were serious about their work and very focused but like old men do they talked about how this might be this way and that might be that way. And if this had been like that then this wouldn't have happened. And the trouble at the bath house with water freezing. This part needs to go down to the shop and be fixed correctly. On and on they went. I was there but ignored, which is fine. I enjoyed listening to their discussion on topics of water, freezing, this year verses last year.

Tonight we had a nice sunset at the beach. I was pretty much the only person there because it was cold again. But in year's past I've been surprised about how few people get to the beach to watch the sun go down. It is the best part of the day!

Of course I took pictures and will process them in due time. I am now taking more cell phone images and video because it can be posted immediately.

Tonight it is not supposed to get below freezing but we will turn off the water anyway just to be safe.

Stay warm!
